Profile Summary

Patrick Sykes is a reservoir engineer with over fifteen years industry experience. While working for Oil Search, he was primarily involved in the numerical simulation of the oil and gas fields of Papua New Guinea. This required construction of simulation input decks from raw datasets, history-matching of complex production and pressure history, and the development of well-, field- and facility-level forecasts, all requiring interaction with multiple other disciplines. These workstreams have required his pragmatic interpretation of simulated output, and effective communication of modelled value propositions to management, venture partners, government regulators and auditors. He’s also had working experience within the commercial sphere, where he provided financial assurance services for energy and mining companies while working with PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

While reservoir simulation has been the primary focus of Patrick’s technical workstreams, he has also spent significant periods of his career in production surveillance and optimization roles. These required wellbore and surface network modelling, and diagnosis and prediction of flow assurance issues – this grounding in the day-to-day realities of production maintenance have positively influenced the way in which he utilizes the tools of reservoir engineering.

Recent work
Oil Search Pty Ltd. - Senior Reservoir Engineer (Sydney, Australia)
Jan-2017 – Sep-2022 (5 years, 9 months)
Role involved extensive reservoir simulation modelling in support of infill development drilling, a major gas delivery project (requiring coupled reservoir-surface network models), a novel subsurface condensate storage-recovery scheme, and a workstream requiring simulation of a CO2 geo-sequestration process (CCS) into the carbonate reservoirs of the US$13bn Papua LNG Project. I’ve assisted with the design of a number of PNG well tests and was present on-site during the tests to monitor and assure quality of data acquisition, analyse flow and pressure transient results real-time, and to convey test progress to internal and external stakeholders. In this role I was also part of a team providing technical reservoir assurance to the US$3bn Pikka Development in Alaska.

Oil Search Pty Ltd. - Reservoir Engineer (Sydney, Australia)
Jan-2012 – Dec-2016 (5 years)
Primarily engaged in compositional reservoir simulation of Oil Search’s operated PNG oil fields in support of infill development drilling, internal resource assessments, and external auditor certifications. During this time PNGLNG drilling and construction was ongoing requiring reservoir engineering support and assurance of non-operated activities. In this role I first became involved in well operations requiring real time analysis of MDT/RDT pressure and mud-gas data, supervision of reservoir fluid sample acquisition, and influenced deliberations impacting adjustments to well trajectory, assessment of acquired data completeness/quality, and well completion decisions.

Oil Search Pty Ltd. - Petroleum Engineer (Sydney, Australia)
Jan-2007 – Dec-2011 (5 years)

Joined Oil Search in a reservoir surveillance role focused initially on production maintenance and optimization from the Kutubu and Moran oilfields in Papua New Guinea. Foundational modelling activities included nodal analysis to optimize gas injection and production systems using GAP, equation of state (EOS) development for several foldbelt reservoir fluids, and rationalization of existing production allocation systems. During my time in this role the US$19bn PNG LNG Project progressed through FEED to FID, in which Oil Search was a venture partner and part-operator; as a result I gained exposure to the license unitization deliberations necessary for PNGLNG's development, discussions around the design considerations requiring subsurface input, and first commenced compositional reservoir simulation of the operated fields in support of these.

PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP - Accountant (Sydney, Australia)
Jan-2005 – Dec-2006 (2 years)

Financial Assurance accountant with the Resources, Service & Government (RSG) sector team. Role primarily involved audit of the transactions, cash flow models, and accounts of mining and energy companies which supported publication of their financial statements.

ABN Amro Bank .N.V. - Research Analyst Intern (Sydney, Australia)
Dec-2003 – Mar-2004 (4 months)

Summer student analyst with the bank’s oil and gas equities research team. Key project culminated in the internal publication of a research report on historical and forecast Shareholder Value Added (SVA analysis) for several Australian oil and gas stocks, a metric that hadn't previously been used by the team.

Santos Pty Ltd. - Petroleum Engineering Intern (Adelaide, Australia)
Dec-2002 – Mar-2003 (4 months)

Summer student petroleum engineer in the Cooper Basin Gas Exploitation team. Key project involved MBal-GAP nodal analysis to understand the back-pressure and value implications to existing mature well stock, of a new field tie-in.
